Information for applicants for IRB SupportFirst Priority Funding:
  • The IRB is interested in Injury and the Tackle.
  • Biomechanics and Tackle situations related to the Tackle are of particular interest.
  • Epidemiology of injury and other medical concerns
  • Interventional trials evaluating reduction of injury or other medical concerns
  • Concussion research
  • Specific gender issues in rugby
  • Drugs and supplements in rugby
Second Priority Funding:
  • Biomechanics of events in rugby (e.g. scrumming forces, etc.) as it relates to injury
  • Physiology of rugby players and their adaption to training as it relates to injury and other medical conditions
  • Psychological issues of playing rugby as it relates to injury and other medical conditions
  • Medical concerns of rugby players (e.g. hydration, hyper-/hypo-thermia, infection, etc.)
Projects Not Funded:
  • Basic, laboratory research with no direct implication to rugby
  • Equipment development
Additionally, you should be aware of some of the general principles guiding research funding by the IRB:
  • That the research benefits all of the rugby community.
  • That the research be applied and lead to conclusions that potentially lead to changes in the game or its management, particularly as it applies to safety.
  • That the research is not situation dependent (i.e. does not benefit only one country or one team).
  • That the review of the application will be international in scope and address scientific and clinical merit, researcher credibility and the ability of the project to be completed.
  • Funding may be for one or two years. Funding for the second year will only be awarded upon documentation of completion of the first year's work. Under special circumstances the funding may be extended to a third year.
  • Research awards do not fund office space or secretarial support. Administrative charges by institutions are not normally funded (a letter outlining their justification can be submitted).
  • Ethics review by an appropriate ethics board is mandatory, as are consent forms of participation for individuals within a study.
  • Technician and research assistant salaries need to be justified (e.g. copy of rates paid by the institution to such employees would be appropriate).
  • Applications will normally be submitted in English (the international scientific language). All budget items should be quoted in pounds sterling.
